    1. I like how this particular page is completely inscrutable to anyone who just happens upon it.

      “Unagis”?

      1. Doubly confusing if you forgot that the gaming system was called that and thought Zora said “Usagi”
I was like, “Wait why is Zora a weeaboo and why does she want a rabbit?”

        1. I was wondering how a little rugrat that is basically raising herself via petty theft could afford sushi.

        2. I thought “rabbit” was “usagi” in Japanese (like in the comic “Usagi Yojimbo”)

I don’t know what “Unagi” means, or if it means anything…

    1. Agreed. She’s obviously still shaken from the experience but she’s trying to fix things for her daddy and get everything back to normal. As if anything could be normal with the Jakes around.

  1. Why is she talking like that at the beginning? I know her font is different from everyone else’s but she usually didn’t say “D’you” and “havva”.
I swear to God if they gave her something or made her drink alcohol I’m gonna find out how to kill comic characters.

  2. I get the impression Zora usually has to be pushy to get anything done, what with the way her dad being the way he is.

    1. Yep. Especially how matter-of-fact that she was about going home early from school. I could imagine the way a teenager would say the same thing. “You’re supposed to be at SCHOOL now, Zora!” “Well I’m here now, okay?” **goes back to what she was doing**

The little lady is gonna get stuff done her way. :)

  3. More likely she learned recently, and at far too early an age, how much adults lie from the Jake crew. As a result, she thinks all adults lie, except for Gene, whom she doesn’t believe CAN lie.

Way to go, Jake. I hope the founder of this little cult is being toasted on a long fork down in Hell.

    1. I think when the Jakes talk about JAKE, they mean the biblical Jacob. The Jakes strike me as a denomination of Christians like Baptists or Presbyters who got a little crazy in the head, started getting strange ideas, then mutated into a religion that bares little resemblance to the Christian doctrine they came from.

    2. There’s also the fact that a lot of adults (At least, a lot that I’ve met in my experiences) lie about that stuff to kids. You know. A kid asks for something simple and easy to get, but the adult, not wanting to get up, says that he/she doesn’t own the item. Or like, a kid wants to go swimming, and the adult – not wanting to have to stop what they are doing and supervise, says that the pool has chemicals in it, when it doesn’t. Stuff like that always happened to me, and I have a feeling I’m not the only one. Maybe my family is just full of lazy liars. Either way, I learned that trust is for suckers REALLY fast when I was a kid. Do I still believe that? Only when it comes to my family ;)

      1. All parents do that. It’s called (not-so-good) parenting. As in, giving your child excuses rather than outright saying no. Because saying no gets the question why, and then unless you’re REALLY brutally truthful, you get more whys. And often, even if you are brutally truthful, you normally get a when. I’m not a parent, but I remember being a kid who always asked those questions. Mind you, our parents were more truthful than lieful, so I got to ask a lot of questions. :-D

        1. I don’t remember my parents EVER lying to me or my sister. Of course I turned out plenty screwed up so maybe they should have.

  4. I know it’s kind of a strange thing to say, but I’m fairly impressed by Zora in this case. It never occurred to me that she actually could fix the game; getting a replacement controller is a very direct and sensible approach. It’s showing her as someone far more capable than first impressions would allow, particularly considering her age. One of the better bits of writing in the comic thus far I figure.

    1. Definitely. She’s generally come across as someone who mostly observes, and pokes at people’s things. Now she’s out to get something to fix things for her dad.

  5. I remember being like that at her age. Skepticism because I couldn’t take an adults word for it. I needed actual proof that said adult knew what they were talking about.
    Fun times, fun times.

  6. Reminds me of how a game system in South Park was the Okama 3000. (Okama means something along the lines of tranny or queer.)

  7. Ah, got it now. Unagi is the name of the game system Gene was playing on. She was asking for a replacement controller for the game system, like we would say Wii or Xbox.

No sillier a name than the Wii, so go fig.
