I think it is more that he doesn’t see that particular notion of “success” to be real success. It just makes you a commodity. There are ways to succeed that allow you to remain your own.
To be honest, a lot of bands that sign labels end up regretting it. The music industry shafts its acts with frightening regularity and efficiency. I mean, freakin Def Leppard had to make “covers” of their own songs to get their masters back, and they were one of the acts that made it big. And they STILL got screwed.
