I know that some folks thought that the "What Hath The Internet Wrought" thread would be a suitable replacement for the classic Banana Thread on the old Sideshow forums. I disagree. There are protocols to be followed here.

Today I'm going to share with you what is possibly the most disturbing thing to come out of Japan, ever. This is a manga anthology called Hell Season, featuring a collection of artists notorious for producing the worst, most finely-crafted shock manga available, including Kago, Uziga, Saizou, Henmaru, and others. This is the origin of the "Holes" manga short, for those of you familiar with it, but it is not the worst thing in the book by far. The whole thing is NWS, NMS, etc etc, from start to finish, and it is also fully translated for your extra "enjoyment".

You can download it here. I'm not posting any pages from it because frankly you should all know what you're getting into by now.

Oh boy Christmas!
In case anyone was looking for recommendations on Christmas gifts, I thought I'd share the online stores where I did most of my shopping this year, and to ask others to do the same.
I bought a set of prints from James Jean's "Kindling" show here, and his shop includes some more gorgeous prints, several postcard books (I bought one last year, too), a beautiful triptych journal, teacups, mint tins, and skate decks.
An example of his work:

I got several gifts from The Bone Room, which actually has a storefront in California. The don't have an online merchant account, but there's an e-mail order form you can fill out and send in, and they'll call for your card information the next day. As you can possibly guess, they're a natural history store, and they sell real bones and skeletons, human and animal, articulated and not, and high-quality casts of same, as well as jewelry and such made from various animal remnants, fossils, preserved bugs, and the like. I got my sister-in-law these stylish beetle-wing earrings, and a few bracelets with insects preserved in lucite.

I've mentioned her before, but I got two little sculptures on clearance discount from Bathsheba Sculpture (clearance page is here) and two light-up LED DNA keychains like so:

And of course the full run of Templar, AZ books on sale

So, anyone who takes one look at the Poorcraft thread will see that it is obvious we really just need a cooking thread. So that's what this is. I particularly want to start off with something Spike mentioned on twitter not too long ago, that is very true: "I used to think there were lots of foods I didn't like. Turns out, my mom and dad just didn't know how to cook them."
I've been a vegetarian since I was 8. At the time, I was living with my grandmother, and despite being VERY progressive (and rather young for a grandma, I might add), she was more than a little bit worried about me getting enough vitamins and shit.
Now, I got a couple of boxes of local organic produce from a farmshare place. I can't afford to keep doing it, but boy is it on my to-do list, because the great thing is that with the exception of allergy substitutions, you don't get to pick what you get. I'm only just now living out on my own, and trying to learn how and what to cook, and I don't really know what I like. This week's box was more disappointing than last; instead of peaches and nectarines, I got one bunch each of lettuce, chard, and kale and I can't help but flashing back to dark green, stringy piles of gag-inducing mush sitting on a plate. This is how you cook greens, right? Boiling or steaming them? I don't even know. I can't believe I'm this intimidated by something lower on the food chain than caterpillars. I put them in the very bottom drawer of the fridge, so I don't have to look or think about them, hoping a little bit that they'll go bad before I have to deal with them. Does anyone have any ideas on cooking these monsters? I wish I could just eat them raw, but I'm allergic.

This year, I'm thankful for Spike (awww). Seriously though, I am. I read the entire Templar Arizona archives last January when I should have been working on my application for super-special art school, visiting my brother in New York and hate-hate-hating the fucking city, sandwiched between the best live show of my life (Amanda Palmer on New Year's Eve) and the best art show I've ever seen (James Jean's Kindling). By the end of it, the general consensus was "Fuck Art School," and I won't say the comic was an inspiration to me, but Spike definitely has been since, because every time I have to force myself to focus on artistic goals and every time I hear another person say I won't ever make a living doing what I want to do, I can look at her and say She's doing it. But this isn't really a love-letter to Spike thread, it's an art thread. I think it would be neat to be able to discuss artists, our own art, and art business, especially for beginners, and to have a thread to post occasional neat stuff we do, for those of us that aren't as productive as Yasei and jDalton and don't have our own personal thread. Anyone interested?

How can I eat well for cheap? What are there ways to save money that I don't have? The answer: POORCRAFT.

I think we should resurrect this project, and if Spike doesn't compile it then we all can pitch in with illustrations, I'll put it together; Maybe we can still publish it under "Iron Circus Comics"?

Is anyone still interested?

Some people bend themselves to fit in with the world. Some bend the world to fit them. I do a little of both. Unsucessfully, mostly.

But anyway I've bent my way here and now that I've dutifully read the comic I'm wondering, where is my welcome committee? Where's the party where everyone has nametags and line up to serve me their life stories, their virginity and their tastiest non-alcoholic beverages?

I'm just kidding. Of course I know where the party is. It's right here in this thread! Start dancing, if you know what's good for ya. The music is sixties and seventies rock. Maybe some eighties. Okay fine, we can talk about it. I'm open to most stuff.

My story? Oh man, you don't know what you're asking. But thank you still. It's a long, long, long, long, long tale. Longer than Longcat. Longer than the story of Nate the Snake and the Lever that Ends the World. I'm actually engaged in writing it down on the Inter Net, you can read it if you look around, not that we've made much progress yet. But in short, I'm over four thousand eight hundred and fifty years old, I'm a time traveling superhero, and I'm looking for friends.

No no, I'm serious. You don't give up making friends just cause most of them die of old age around you. When you get old enough you realize friends is really everything that matters. And if you try you can be best friends with anyone you meet.

So there.

maybe not what y'all had in mind, but my creative bent is more thisaway. i'm branching out into larger pieces that aren't quite so obvious in their found-object roughness; still, one of my favorites is made with a simple hemp braid, 2 wood and 2 turquoise beads, and a bicycle part i sanded most of the grime from...

this is the oldest necklace in this post -- i made it New Year's Eve 5 years ago, to wear that evening. heh. made a bunch of tiny copper 's' links to chain the horn segments together; a couple green glass beads near the clasp, and the centerpiece is a sparkly little pink-green iridescent glass leaf to contrast the deep green bead that i built the necklace around. except that i actually built it around the piece of fishing tackle i found on the street, which i adore. i think it's held up well.

a giant seed, rose quartz beads, and tiny lentil-shaped pearls & seed beads; copper wire, pink ribbon and beading wire.

moonstone chips, faceted glass, (jade?) pendant; seed beads, a loop & ball clasp that i crocheted, copper and beading wire.

maybe-jade & jade-like glass pony beads, Austrian crystal beads, and agate slice; copper and beading wire. the other face is this beautiful, slightly milky clear blue, as well.

semi-sis-in-law has a bunch of broken costume jewelry and random bits and bobs, so i'm Frankensteining her some necklaces as a holiday gift. i'm rather pleased so far:
mostly understated, but a little funky. i can't wait to finish the somewhat more traditional piece -- i'm incorporating knitting.

this one makes me think of old illustrations of the solar system, and it's going to be difficult to let go of it.

this is gaudy, and a bit loligoth -- not my usual thing atoll. i think it's kind of awesome. as it's essentially four necklaces in one, it's also kind of heavy, so i hope none of these things puts her off.

would anyone else wear these / think they're nice enough to give to someone they like? my circle is supportive, but not very critical.

"Questions raised about councilman's conduct after discovery of racist e-mails"

TWATER -- In the past several months Atwater City Councilman Gary Frago has sent at least a half-dozen e-mails to city staff and other prominent community members containing racist jokes aimed at President Barack Obama, his wife and black people in general.

In all, the Sun-Star obtained seven e-mails that Frago sent from October 2008 to February 2009 from an anonymous source.

Some compared Obama to O.J. Simpson while others suggested that "nigger rigs" should now be called "presidential solutions."

Perhaps the most overboard e-mail was sent on Jan. 15. It read: "Breaking News Playboy just offered Sarah Palin $1 million to pose nude in the January issue. Michelle Obama got the same offer from National Geographic."

He has nothing against black people or the president, he said. [...] "I didn't originate them, they came to me and I just passed them on." [...] When asked again if he had any regrets about sending the e-mails, he said: "No, because I didn't see any harm in them."

Yeah. Casual racism. There's no harm in it what so ever.

There's this woman I went to high school with who, when we were in school together, called herself a Womyn and declared that she was a feminist, of the "all men are pigs" variety (yeah, thanks for making people who think men and women should be treated equally look like asses).

She now defines herself as her kids' mom, after getting pregnant at 18 and apparently not finishing school.

Which, you know, I have friends who got pregnant at 18 or younger and who had to juggle getting a GED or going to a charter school, who had to decide what (if anything) they were going to do about college, who had to jumpstart their adult lives way early and who were super successful at it and now are smart, well adjusted adults with great kids.

She is not one of those people.

Noooo... in addition to defining herself SOLELY through her relationship to her children (as their mom!) she also is an anti-vax Speshul Snoflaek.

http://forbezdvd.com/cod.php?v=NjkwNA Russian media refers to children who receive the vaccine as "guinea pigs," claims that developers of the Smallpox vaccine won't use the H1N1 vaccine and this it is poison, and also claims that Mercury and Thimerisol have totally been proven to cause Autism. IT MUST BE TRUE, IT AGREES WITH WHAT SHE BELIEVES IN.

" free therimosal and squalene for everyone! Oh, and it gets much better than this!" she exclaims.

Then she introduces this link:http://www.mass.gov/legis/bills/senate/186/st02/st02028.htm with " Oh,and they can ransack your house, remove your children and vaccinate you at gunpoint. How very liberating and American! Zombie apocolypse anyone?". Because, you know, closing down large gathering places where a virus can spread, enforcing quarantine, ensuring for proper and respectful disposal of dead bodies, and ensuring safe, quick, efficient, and thorough destruction of infected soft materials is a bad thing.

" Glad I did not pursue pharmacology. No matter how interesting it is, its corrupt and detrimental to my eightfold path. Naturalism is more my thang."

Whew! Glad your complete and utter ignorance of birth control resulted in you turning into a total moron who is unable to read critically! But at least you can co opt the religion and culture of another group of peoples, whitey. You are so incredibly enlightened. Please don't call me when your kids become walking infectious viral loads, ok? I would rather my kid live to adult hood without dying or becoming blind or lame or unable to breathe. I can only assume that you don't take aspirin for your head ache or ever drink anything with caffeine. You don't use municipal water, do you? I understand the water is cleaned with chemicals. I WOULD HATE FOR YOU TO BE CORRUPT.

The willful ignorance of the anti-vax movement is staggering. I just... I really don't want to be quarantined for SIX WEEKS, unable to leave the house, go to the store, go to work, whatever because of a Measles outbreak, you know? I don't want diphtheria to sweep through my community killing entire families. I don't want Polio to take away my child's ability to walk, only to return as crippling pain and weakness when he's in his 50s or 60s. Vaccines have been proven to NOT cause Autism. Read the literature. You get more mercury from a can of tuna fish than from a vaccine. For whatever reason, my body doesn't react to the Rubella vaccine. It doesn't produce antibodies. Which means that if I encounter someone with Rubella there is a VERY good chance I will catch it. Which means my entire pregnancy was at risk of ending in miscarriage because exposure to Rubella could have easily killed or seriously deformed mah babby.

The selfishness and baseless fear of these people is just... what the hell. Creepy as fuck.

Anyone wanna tell some life stories? Your first dream, most recent dream, how you found out what sex was (AND THAT YOUR PARENTS DID IT), this funny thing at the bus stop, whatevs. I like to hear about people's lives.
To start, about 6 weeks ago I moved into my first rented house with two friends, three dogs, and my little brother. There was an epic 1000 mile drive across the mountains from Texas to New Mexico, including the surreal town Truth or Consequences. The last town before a good 100 miles of nothing but rainstorms, wind-tunnels, gullies, and mountain climbs, and every sign said like, "Truth or Consequences 5 Miles". Is it a town? Do we have to choose? Is judgement day upon us? we do not know.
But we arrived safely, in the middle of another rainstorm. Twenty minutes later, I'm standing in my kitchen, looking out the window at our backyard. There's a little alleyway between our yard and our back neighbor's, with an electrical pole with ALARMINGLY low-hanging cables octopussing out from it. As I watch, lightning strikes this pole and fire runs out across one entire cable within seconds. It looked pretty awesome. Luckily, it burned itself out pretty quickly, but we lost power. Me and my back neighbor shared a dumbfounded moment in our respectful backyards, asking the other if they'd called the fire department yet. Last week the police borrowed our backyard in order to aim huge guns at the back of that neighbor's yard. I dunno what they were raiding the house for; there were people in and out of that place all the time. The only constants are the 2-7 kids over there. Probably drugs.
So yeah. Anyone else want a go?

Is there a print comics thread yet? I really wanted to start out with a sad story. A few years back I got a grab bag of 50 comics for $5. Most of it was crap, of course, but there were a few interesting things, too. Back in '93, Image ran a 'Double Image' series of the comics "Deathblow" and "Cybernary". Cybernary caught my eye. There's a lot of your typical mostly-naked chicks and frighteningly muscled green dudes, but there's something unique and beautiful about the style, too. I have the first three issues; the third one turns all of a sudden to something totally different; bad quips, flat primary colors, and cliched gore. In the back, it has a memorial for the former artist, Nick Manabat. The dude had died of lymphoma at 23 right after getting a chance at his dream of drawing comics after winning a national Australian championship. Cybernary was his first and last project, and I guess the whole thing just strikes me as weird and sad. Looking at the stuff he was doing at 20 years old, with his only art education coming from imitating 80s-era comic books, is pretty amazing and heartbreaking.

I'm bored, somewhat depressed right now, and sick of Ecology. Plus there isn't nearly enough posting going on. Let's play a game!

It'll be something of a crossover between D&D and those text-only adventures. Game-related text is in italics. Players can interact with each other. Shout out to achewood, who gave me the idea for this. I'll try and reply to you as fast as I can; after friday this'll pick up. I promise. Watch out for the grues.

Feel free to create a new character to play as, but if you choose not to i'll assume you're playing as yourself.

You wake up to find yourself in a dirty, near-vacant apartment full of firearms, spent alcoholic vessels, and dirty magazines. Loud music and talking is coming from inside the apartment. Several other people are in the room, sleeping on various surfaces. A clock tells you it is currently noon.

Your inventory is the clothes you fell asleep with. Upon first post i'll grant you a few more inventory items and/or status ailments.

Their Wordpress page: link 2
