Chapter 5: Lit, page 17.
I missed Stumptown. Sucks.
BUT. Book 4 is now available, individually and in packs, at the Iron Circus Store.
Well he’s looking up toward the ceiling as you can see in panel three, so we’re not seeing his eyes straight on. His glasses should be placed higher on his face in the second panel, not below his eyes, that might be what’s throwing things off a bit.
Couldn’t remember Nichiren Shoshu because another name was “occupying that slot” in my head. Then when I wanted to explain that I couldn’t remember the other one and only came up with Falun Gong. What is another banned movement, with a name that ends in “Rickie O”? [Probably “ri kyu” but I always catch it on the radio not print so have it mentally filed with Ricky-O.]
As a TVless troglodyte, I probably haven’t seen as many of these ‘pan through walls’ scene changes as most of you have — but the way it was used here just made me want to pump my fist in the air. Wonderful transition!
I have a feeling that if Reagan knew what they’re really on about, Feather would get an instant fanclub with one member. Remember how excited/interested she was when Feather gave her first little sermon.
I think that Reagan, as much as she loves to hear the crazy, would draw the line at actual bad shit. IMHO, that whole “prophesy” thing with Gene and all the stuff Feather’s putting Zora through right now would probably just piss Reagan off. It’s like the difference between listening to a crazy homeless guy rant about conspiracies on the subway and seeing him attack a fellow passenger.
Who cares? They ain’t stayin’, but best to hide out while they’re still at it. Also, thank you Spike, it was getting to be too much of that freak show.
On an unrelated note, in the archives, Feather says she was only 15 when she had Gene. If that’s true, doesn’t she look ancient for her age (late 30s to early 40s)? She looks aged 15-20 years. Hard life?
Living mostly outdoors, physical work (whatever they do when they’re not in a city) and having to look after the deadbeat Marcus might be the causes… XP
this is a very sad comic for me, and it has nothing to do with the contents…
…
I finished the archive and now I have to wait for updates to read more!
*sigh* I know this moment is coming every time I find a gem of a comic like this, and yet it still sucks each time.
That aside, To the talented artist who brought us this gem, Thank you. the art is just great, and the writing has been amazing.
I look forward(impatiently) to future pages.
The story’s great, the art’s terrific, I know. But all I can think of when I read this page is that it must have taken some serious research (or clever guesswork) to draw the floor cross-section.
Sorry.
Anyone else feel bad for poor Marcus? He’s right on the brink of realization that Jakeskin is bullshit, here’s hoping that this throat/ball grab pushes him over the edge. But then he might be too damaged at this point to make it outside the cult.
I also missed Stumptown. Sucks equally. Portland is awesome. Am I interpreting this right that Ben’s apt. is just below where the Jakes are hanging out? Seems like the odd screaming fit and ball-squeezing might be pretty much routine and unremarkable … ;)
judging by the background, I’d say Ben and Reagan are in the lobby. Fancy marble n’ scroll work aren’t exactly Mr. Pickle-n-waffle-sandwiches thing, I’d hazard.
Wasn’t Gene’s apartment above Ben’s? Or closeby above. When the Jakes were “summoning” the whatever into Eugene and were making a whole lot of noise. And I have to wonder what will be going down between Ben and Feather’s posse before too long – she’s already said once she didn’t like Ben, what with him being too nosy or something like that. And if Ben now heard the fight and then Feather’s little speech to Marcus, I can’t help but wonder where it’ll lead.
You know, your portrayal of what it’s like to have one’s balls crushed is disturbingly accurate. Especially since, you know, you keep yours inside where they’re nice and safe. Did you practice this technique on your brother?
Ben! Yay :)
Yes, Ben yay!
Marcus still ain’t dead, but I beat he wishes he was.
*BET he wishes. ugh, damn typo.
That is, oddly, one of the most Asian shots I’ve ever seen of Ben in panel 1(?) and I say that as a (half) Korean. I don’t know what it is.
This might be the first time we’ve ever seen Ben straight on.
The last panel here looks pretty straight on:

If you’ve ever had glasses, you -know- they slip down your nose. A lot.
It’s actually more unusual for them to be where they’re supposed to be than for them to be halfway down your face, slipping off the end of your nose.
O.o you folks need to adjust your glasses better. I haven’t had that problem since I was 12.
it’s his straight-assed hair.
It’s his eyes.
oh jesus christ lord places to go what is Ray wearing and why would Ben agree to go with her. *covers eyes with hands, peeks through fingers*
BEN IT IS TIME TO LEAVE THE BUILDING get away from the psychotic survival cult please.
It’s psychotic cult vs cheap rent. Good luck Ben!
I once lived upstairs from a chanter who had weekly chapter meetings at his place. Not psychotic or criminal but a little disturbing.
Ah yeah, it was Nichiren Shoshu. Took me a couple minutes to remember.
Couldn’t remember Nichiren Shoshu because another name was “occupying that slot” in my head. Then when I wanted to explain that I couldn’t remember the other one and only came up with Falun Gong. THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL BEN. Now leave the building before the Jake cult eats your damn eyes.
C’mon, Ben! Blow the lid on this thing, make Reagan realize that these idiots are just as stupid batshit as Gordon!

Since we’re talking about Ray, I’m going to give your statement a 50% chance of being true. :-P
Who cares? They ain’t stayin’, but best to hide out while they’re still at it. Also, thank you Spike, it was getting to be too much of that freak show.
BENNNN!!!
Reagan, go kick Feather’s ass! Please? You could take Scip to hold her down. I won’t tell. :)

Living on the lam, popping out kids constantly, and drinkin moonshine out of pickle jars will do that to ya.
Living mostly outdoors, physical work (whatever they do when they’re not in a city) and having to look after the deadbeat Marcus might be the causes… XP
The whole head-shaved-bald thing doesn’t help her look youthful, either.

Reagan, PUH-lease get Gene and Zora outta there.
Also, kudos to Ben for being pretty attentive.
*sigh* I am so very worried about Gene and Zora.
I’m more worried about Ben and what’ll happen if he’s caught – again – listening in on the Jakes’ private stuff. XD
Yay Reagan!
The story’s great, the art’s terrific, I know. But all I can think of when I read this page is that it must have taken some serious research (or clever guesswork) to draw the floor cross-section.
Sorry.
Watch any “home remake” reality show on TV, and chances are you’ll get to see a cross-section of a floor/ceiling. =P

oh, good point!
Does Ben have a marble bathroom? I’m not sure what’s happening in the background there.
Wasn’t Gene’s apartment above Ben’s? Or closeby above. When the Jakes were “summoning” the whatever into Eugene and were making a whole lot of noise. Ben looks so *tiny*…
You are kind of the best.
seconded.
This is why city lunches are a bad idea. :(
BEN!!!! oh, how i missed your shining face
marcus looks like he sustained a little brain damage
I get the feeling Feather would set the “killer” Gene on Ben without any hesitation. She already doesn’t like Ben.
LOL
I was not expecting this. Epic plot twist.

YES! Finally, characters I care about!
