      1. Well… They’re differently sheltered, with their own unique issues.

Ben has never encountered some things (like, apparently, drunks and the Cook family), so has no idea how to deal with them. So it’s novel, and he does/says whatever he can figure out on the fly.

Scipio…just has a few trigger topics, that he Can’t Handle. So, when the wrong kinds of impropriety come up, he gets all flustered and ‘oh my god’s and ‘oh dear’s and flups about like an old lady until the situation is resolved somehow.

    1. The box he took it out of was labeled “Dad’s Waxes” so I’m guessing it’s full of wax models of various representations of disease symptoms.

  1. Interesting.
Syphilus is believed to be the disease the Americas gave to the Europeans in exchange for smallpox. Eventually penicillin was able to treat it, but it was a big thing once. Is this indicating that syphillus is a big thing still? Or is it just really old medical stuff? I’d better read on to find out.

    1. While syphilis strains were present in the Americas before they came in contact with the Europeans, other syphilis strains also existed in Europe before they came in contact with the native Americans. “It is believed” that many cases of leprosy were actually syphilis.

  2. You must be in the terminal stages to have such pronounced lesions like that. Some people have speculated that some strains of syphilis could enhance brain function before it did damage. I don’t know if anyone has done research on that to see if it is more than observation and anecdote.
