  1. Yes. They were, weren’t they? But we read them anyway, so we know how NOT to do it that way. Which is important.

No. It isn’t easy to be a writer.

  2. Meh. The only big classics I’ve been able to stomach is Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies. You know, the really short ones. You don’t need to read Literature unless you want to write Literature and you don’t need to write Literature to write.

  3. If you’re reading Literature because it’s Literature … well, that’s kind of its own punishment. Great Expectations is hilarious, though. (If you are ever forced to read Literature and have a choice, grab something by Dickens or Twain, as they both primarily wrote entertainment that was good enough to be considered literature. If your Lit teacher is cool enough, Bierce is a palatable option as well.)

    1. I agree. I love me some Austen and Twain and Dickens, but it helps to be able to approach them as stories that sound interesting to you, not as part of some carved-in-stone list that somebody else thinks you should read.

  4. I dunno, I liked Great Expectations well enough. Lord of the Flies was pretty enjoyable too.

Pretty sincere of him to read ’em all, though.

  5. Hey, I liked Robinson Crusoe, Catch-22, and The Chocolate War. I occasionally read them again just to enjoy them, y’know?

And i just picked up a first edition of THE WESTING GAME by Ellen Raskin, the same version I read with I was in 5th grade. That is a good book.

  6. I LOVE 1984… because I love the writing so much. I love the style and I love how it made me feel. However, I hate when people use aspects of it for political debates. So annoying.
